A Shotgun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC) purposed to create an optimal environment for mushroom fruiting. It works by maintaining high humidity levels while allowing for adequate air exchange, which are essential conditions for successful mushroom growth and development. The SGFC typically consists of a plastic container with multiple holes drilled into its sides, filled with a moist, inert substrate at the bottom to provide humidity.

Here’s how to make a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber with step-by-step instructions:

    Materials Needed:

Plastic storage container with lid (18-gallon size recommended)
Drill with a 1/4-inch drill bit
    Perlite or vermiculite
    Water
    Hygrometer (optional but recommended)
    Spray bottle
    Step-by-Step Instructions:

    Prepare the Container:
Thoroughly clean the plastic container and its lid with soap and water. Ensure that they are completely dry before proceeding.

    Drill Holes:
Using the drill with the 1/4-inch drill bit, evenly space holes around the sides of the container. These holes should be approximately 2 inches apart and cover most of the container’s surface area.

    Prepare the Substrate:
Fill the bottom of the container with a layer of perlite or vermiculite, about 2-3 inches deep. This substrate layer will provide moisture to maintain humidity levels within the chamber.

    Moisten the Substrate:
Use a spray bottle to moisten the substrate layer with water until it is evenly damp but not saturated. Be careful not to create standing water at the bottom of the container.

    Assemble the Chamber:
Place the lid securely on the container to help retain moisture inside the chamber.

    Monitor Humidity Levels:
If available, use a hygrometer to monitor the humidity levels inside the chamber. Ideally, humidity should be maintained above 90% for optimal mushroom fruiting conditions.

    Prepare for Fruiting:
Once the chamber is set up and humidity levels are stable, it is ready for mushroom fruiting. Place the inoculated substrate or mushroom spawn inside the chamber and close the lid.

    Provide Adequate Lighting:
Place the chamber in a well-lit area with indirect sunlight or provide artificial light for 12-16 hours per day to stimulate mushroom growth. (this is not always necessary, some mushrooms can benefit from less exposure to light)

    Maintain Humidity and Air Exchange:
Regularly check the humidity levels inside the chamber and mist the substrate with water as needed to maintain high humidity. Ensure that passive air exchange is facilitated through the holes drilled in the container’s sides.

    Harvesting Mushrooms:
Once the mushrooms start to mature, carefully harvest them by gently twisting and pulling, or cutting them away from the substrate. Be sure to harvest them before they release spores to prevent a mess or any complications.

By following these step-by-step instructions, you can create a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber to provide an ideal environment for mushroom fruiting. Adjustments may be needed based on environmental conditions and the type of mushrooms you choose to cultivate, and/or the techniques you employ to produce fruiting blocks to place inside the chamber.
